CHAPTER 21

Jersey Boy

Back in Jersey with my people. The “return of the prodigal son.” I am ready to tear up the world. But first I am in need of living quarters. Mom had been gracious enough to hunt down an apartment for me in Ridgewood, but the tenant decides not to vacate at the last minute and I, a 36-year-old orthopaedic surgeon, am forced to spend the night in my parents’ house.

Going to sleep in my boyhood bed, remembering sleeping on the floor next to it upon returning from India; seeing the college and Yankees pennants still on the walls where I carefully placed them decades ago; recalling how still I used to lay in bed during the dog days of August to keep from sweating before central air conditioning became commercially available (Mom was not in favor of fans because she believed they made you sick), and sweetly reliving the stories about the Prince on the White Horse that Mom used to softly whisper to help me get over those frightful night-terrors, makes me embrace the significance of one more night at home. But, of course, living with my folks at this stage is unacceptable.

The next day a realtor at Quail Heights apartments in Hackensack tells me how lucky I am to get the only one bedroom available in the whole blasted city. A girl just vacated the apartment so she could save money by sharing a two-bedroom unit upstairs with a girlfriend. Not spectacular, but I’ll take it, especially since the building has a reputation for housing hot single girls. “And don’t miss the July 4th party tonight out by the pool,” she says with a wink. “I met my future husband down there a few years ago.” Even though, in the last several months, I am starting to have thoughts about not being so young anymore and fearing that I could miss out on becoming a father, my main object is to get laid, not married.

Without question I decide to check out the “talent” at the poolside celebration. Within minutes a blond and brunette come over to me. Debbie, the brunette does most of the talking. She asks if I am the “hot guy” that she heard about who moved into her apartment today. How the hell does she even know of the transaction that I completed just hours ago? There is something about her voice and the entire freaky circumstance that makes me nervous. I can’t put my finger on it, but since the girls are both cute I go with it. I have a really good time (despite only a goodnight kiss).

Quail Heights (commonly known as “Quaalude” Heights) is a bachelor’s delight. But despite the talent and play, my relationship with the brunette gets serious. The evening I enter the apartment house elevator to find myself alone with Debbie and her dentist boyfriend Steve, is monumental. Despite his handsome 6’4” frame and relative youth, Debbie later tells me that it was that elevator ride that made her break off their relationship and focus her attention on me.
